Tomahawk, Merrill advance to volleyball section finals Submitted: 10/25/2012
MOSINEE, SCHOFIELD - Just two matches from a trip to Green Bay for the state championships. That's what volleyball teams throughout the state were facing heading into Thursday night.

In Division Two, Tomahawk faced Antigo. Hatchets finished state runner-up a year ago. Despite a team with several new faces from the 2011 team, plus the departure of long-time head coach Jenn Pfannerstill, Tomahawk appears poised for a return to state. Tomahawk needed five games, but defeated Antigo 3-2.

The match was played at Mosinee High School. Tomahawk will face Barron on Saturday night's section final. The match is scheduled to be played in Altoona.

Last week, Pfannerstill resigned as both head coach and her teaching position at Tomahawk High School for personal reasons. Assistant coach Jerry Angle has taken over as head coach.

Meanwhile, in Division One, Merrill advanced to the section final with a three games to one victory over Stevens Point. The match was played at D.C. Everest High School in Schofield.

Merrill takes on Marshfield Saturday night in the D-1 section final, scheduled to be played at Wausau East High School. Marshfield won 2 of the 3 matches earlier this season.
