- The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team won its second consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship Wednesday evening, defeating UW-La Crosse, 3-0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-18).
The Eagles opened the first set with a 3-0 run, but Sarah Wildish served the Pointers to eight consecutive points as UWSP handily won the first set, 25-11.
Wildish recorded five kills in the second set, including the final point to give UWSP the 25-22 win.
In the third and final set, Morgan Bartkowiak had a stretch of three consecutive kills to help the Pointers win the set (25-18) and the match.
Wildish led all players with 13 kills and Bartkowiak added a game-high five blocks.
Hannah Picel led the Pointers with 13 digs, followed by Ally Groth with 11.
Alexis Hartman tallied a game-high 35 assists.
Although the mentality of this year's championship team differs from last year's championship team, the feeling is just as sweet for Pointers' head coach Stacey White.
“Last year it was a surprise,” said White. “We were kind of the underdogs. It was a great feeling because we didn't know it was going to happen. This time we were expected to win so we always had a target on our back, but we were able to rise to the occasion.”
