Tomahawk volleyball wins first match with new coach Submitted: 10/18/2012
TOMAHAWK, RHINELANDER, MERRILL - Several Northwoods volleyball teams began their second season tonight. A year ago, the Tomahawk Hatchets earned their first trophy at state - the D-2 Runner-Up Crown. This season, despite a very different team, Hatchets back at it - but they will have new coach.

On Tuesday, Hatchets head coach Jen Pfannerstill stepped down - citing personal reasons. Jerry Angle takes over as head coach.

Tomahawk began their post season with a three games to none sweep over Lakeland on Thursday night. Tomahawk will face Mosinee in the regional final in Tomahawk Saturday night.

In Division One, Rhinelander took on River Falls. The Hodags kept the momentum of their first conference champion rolling. Rhinelander defeated River Falls three games to one.

Katie Burrell led Rhinelander with 20 kills. Taylor Wissbroecker added 17 kills. Katie's sister Lindsay had 48 assists. Rhinelander travels to Eau Claire North Saturday night.

Also in D-1, Merrill swept Wausau West in three games. Renee Sladek had 11 kills for Merrill. The Bluejays next face Wausau East on Saturday.
