MERRILL - He's served Merrill for over thirty years, but as of 2013, fire chief Bob Odegard is hanging up his helmet.


Odegard has been chief for five years. He says stepping down was a tough decision - but he knew it was time.

"It's a hard thing to come to grips with, knowing when it's time to go," he said. "I'll miss the place, that's for sure. All the good people we have here, we have such talented people I work with. It's such an honor and a privilege to work with and serve the people of Merrill. It's been an honor serving them for all of these years."

City administrator David Johnson has already started the hiring process, but he believes Odegard will be tough to replace.

"From what I have seen and heard of him, he is well-respected in the community, he has the respect of his men and I think it will be a loss for the city to see him retire," he said.

Odegard's last day is December 31st. He'll continue to live in Merrill and be involved in the community through the Lion's, Sportsman's and Silver M clubs.
