The Beacons Resort Thriving in a Tough Economy Submitted: 06/15/2012
MINOCQUA - When money’s tight, families usually scale back on luxuries like annual summer trips.

But for one resort that has remained a beacon in Minocqua for decades, business is thriving.

Mary Martin, the Co-Director of Beacons of Minocqua, said “We are up substantially from last year. It’s going to be an incredibly busy summer in July and August."

Sitting on 14 acres of woods, right on Lake Minocqua is one of the town’s most historical resorts.

From fishing to hiking, The Beacons of Minocqua offers several amenities which keep drawing guests back.

Jason Nicol, a guest at The Beacons, said "There’s all kinds of good stuff to do here. We’re easily entertained for a whole week while we’re up here. It’s a lot of fun. A lot of good memories made up here."

The resort has 81 units total, including 4 cabins.

A majority of those units are time shares or family owned and rented out through the resort.

Depending on the room, nightly fares can run anywhere from $93 to $400 for a cabin.

Martin said, “I think the economy has changed things for people. I think they’re looking at how they spend their money a little more carefully.”

80% of guests at the Beacons have stayed here before. Some have been coming to the resort for more than 20 years. But many are changing their spending habits.

“People might not be coming to stay for full weeks. They might be able to come for a couple of days a couple more times than they normally would so they have to adjust with that,” said Martin.

Another way the resort generates money during the summer months is by hosting weddings.

Dozens of couples say their vows at the Beacons and that helps keep the resort afloat during the off season.

"This is the best place to be, absolutely," said Nicol.
