WISCONSIN - Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has been declared the winner over former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk in a primary election that determined who will take on first-term governor Scott Walker in a historic recall election next month.
Barrett and Falk were two of four Democrats on Tuesday's ballot who are looking to challenge Walker in the June 5 general election that has become a nationally watched battle over union rights.
Since his successful push to effectively end collective bargaining rights for most state workers, Walker has emerged as a national conservative hero.
Other Democrats on the ballot were Secretary of State Doug La Follette and state Sen. Kathleen Vinehout. Gladys Huber was a Republican running as a Democrat.
Walker faced token opposition in the GOP primary from Arthur Kohl-Riggs, a Walker opponent running as a Republican. Walker won roughly 97% of the vote in that race.
There was also a statewide Democratic primary for Lieutenant Governor, between Madison firefighter Mahlon Mitchell, Milwaukee private detective Ira Robins, and fake Democrat Isaac Weix.
Mitchell was declared the winner early Tuesday night.
Mitchell will go on to face current Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch.
There were also four primaries in races to recall Republican state senators.
Many Northwoods voters selected between state Rep. Donna Seidel and protest candidate Jim Buckley for the Democratic nomination in the 29th senate district.
Seidel cruised to an easy victory and will face Rep. Jerry Petrowski on June 5.
