Resort and Tavern Burglaries Submitted: 11/19/2009
ONEIDA COUNTY - The Oneida County Sheriff's Department says eight resorts and taverns have been burglarized between September and November.

When someone broke into Deanne VonArx's resort five weeks ago--she knew exactly what she would do to make sure it didn't happen again.

Deann VonArx has owned the Alpine Resort in Harshaw for 26 years. Never did she feel the need for an alarm system--until now.

She tells Newswatch 12, "I was scared."

Deanne's business was burglarized in the early morning hours of October 13th.

She says, "I was bartending, I went upstairs around 12:30 and I came down at six, and I knew someone had been in here, because I closed and there was stuff on the floor."

Deanne says burglars took cigarettes, tip money and money from inside games, along with cash from inside her party jugs. She says the money stolen plus the damage repairs totals $2500.

"I do think it was someone who's been in here and knew where everything was. The keys for the games, I'm sure they were here and watched."

Because of this--Deanne now has a camera along with four alarms at each door.

"So I feel safer."

The Oneida County Sheriff's Department says a total of eight resorts and taverns were burglarized in the area and they're asking for your help to solve these crimes.

Sara Wolosek, the Oneida County Sheriff's Department Crime Prevention Officer says, "Report any suspicious activity around these addresses vehicle descriptions, suspicious people."

The eight resorts and taverns burglarized include: Pine Harbor Tavern, Alpine Resort, Log Cabin Tavern, Wonders Pit Stop, Holiday Acres Resort, Watering Hole Tavern, Little Rice Resort and Willow Wood Lodge. Wolosek says if you see anything out of the ordinary call the Sheriff's Department.

"They can contact the Oneida County Sheriff's Department 361-5100 or if they would like to remain anonymous they can contact WeTip at wetip.com or 1-800-78-CRIME.

A tip that could help solve the burglary at Deanne VonArx's resort and tavern and others in the area. »

Deputy Wolosek says the burglaries are happening fast, in some cases only a minute to get in and out.

She stresses calling the sheriff's department at the sign of any suspicious activity--even if it's someone you know.

Wolosek adds if you can try and get the car's license plate.
