TOMAHAWK - Zach Zehner has won 131 matches as a high school wrestler.
The Tomahawk senior won the State championship at 125 pounds last season as a junior. Colleges took notice and Wednesday Zehner announces he's going to be Wyoming Cowboy.
The senior made it official late this afternoon by putting the pen to the paper in front of his friends and family.
Zehner had a dozen division one schools including Wisconsin and another dozen division two schools interested in him, but in the end felt wrestling for the University of Wyoming was the best choice.
"I visited a lot of other schools and I went out to Wyoming." says Tomahawk senior Zach Zehner. "It was the first visit I had and I actually wasn't feeling the greatest when I went out there so I made two trips to Wyoming and both trips I just loved it out there. I figured if I'm going to go D-1 I want to do something new. Experience something new."
"You know when you're talking D-1 you're talking about a pretty elite athlete." adds Tomahawk Co-Head Coach Bob Skubal. "You never know how someone is going to turn out. Zach is a very physical wrestler. He's a very determined wrestler, he's very aggressive, very fast. He had all the tools to go D-1 it was just a matter of getting the right breaks along the way and to be honest he created his own breaks."
Zehner expects to wrestle at 141 pounds for Wyoming next year. He enters the season as the 11th ranked wrestler in the country in his weight class.
